stereo-link USB DACs

Model 1600HD

The 1600 Series
Third Generation Design

Our newest 1600 series of USB DACs and are designed to meet the demanding expectations of high-end audiophiles, while remaining affordably priced. Many hours of critical listening have gone into selecting the components and fine tuning the circuit. It features a new, very low noise power supply design using low ESR capacitors that provides a total of 4 separate voltage supplies to the internal components. Audiophile quality components, and the latest ultra-low distortion op-amps from National Semiconductor are used throughout the analog signal path. Like its predecessors, the 1600 series incorporate our unique isolation circuitry that keeps electrical noise in your computer from getting into your audio system, and virtually eliminates ground loop problems. The rear panel Neutrik RCA jacks are electrically isolated from the chassis and computer ground.

The electronics are housed in a heavy metal cabinet that further acts as a shield against electrical noise generated by the computer. The cabinet itself is treated with vibration absorbing material to eliminate cabinet resonances. The result is an amazingly open and transparent sound that will transforms your computer into a truely high-end music source.

The 1600HD with headphone amplifier is designed to drive a wide range of high end headphones, delivering 75 mW Max into 33 ohms or 130 mW Max into 150 ohms with virtually no distortion (see the graphs on the specification page). Volume is adjusted in the analog domain with the front panel knob, allowing you to maintain full digital resolution to the DAC.

The 1625 has no headphone amplifier and provides line level out only. An analog volume control allows you to adjust level of the line out, allowing the DAC to be used without a separtate pre-amp, or with powered speakers.

The product includes a Belkin Pure-AV high-end USB cable. Our StudioSeries audio interconnects are available in your choice of length.
Because we use low-noise linear power supplies, we have separate models for each of the major line voltages: 110V, 220/240V, and 100V for Japan. Please allow a few days for orders to be processed, as we burn-in each unit before final testing and shipping.

"..."Almost every day I receive MP3 files from hopeful composers and vocalists. The Stereo-Link 1600 has become indispensable as it enables me to listen to these files with superb fidelity. It really comes into its own when I am able to enjoy music transmitted via the many lossless sources that are becoming rapidly available. The Stereo-Link is reliable and well-built in the United States. I cannot recommend it highly enough."

SL1300SE

1300 Special Edition
Limited edition cabinet

Our original 1300 electronics are reintroduced in a limited edition aluminum cabinet. This Special Edition USB DAC delivers audiophile quality sound at an attractive price.

StudioSeries Cable

StudioSeries Interconnects

We also manufacture a line of quality RCA interconnects designed to provide the best sounding connection no matter how far apart your stereo-link and soundsystem may be. Our StudioSeries is manufactured from Mogami Hi Definition cable and Neutrik gold RCA connectors, components used in leading recording studios around the world. The result is a great sounding, rugged, yet economical stereo interconnect that will guarantee signal purity even over long lengths.

The stereo-link story

NY Times stereo-link was featured in the Oct 25th 2007 New York Times article entitled "Digital Music To Please Even the Snobs" by Lawrence M. Fisher. Click on the button to read the article and listen to an interview with the author.

Back in 1999, we envisioned the impact computers would have on the way people bought, stored and listened to their music. Many companies saw the potential for portable players. Instead we designed the first true Audio Component for your computer - and your ears. So you could play music on your computer and get the same (or even better) quality sound you've come to expect from a good CD player. Clean, powerfull bass. Natural, smooth highs. A sense of space. No hum. No noises. No compromise.

How it works

We use USB to digitally transfer the music out of the computer to the stereo-link (a box about the size of a hardcover book). There, away from the electrically noisy computer, it is converted to a clean analog signal. This is referred to as a USB DAC (Digital to Analog Converter). You connect the stereo-link to a line level input on your preamp, receiver or amplifier just as you would a CD or DVD player. The computer's existing sound devices are bypassed altogether.

Our unique design, featured in all our models, features a special isolation circuit that keeps the ground of your computer isolated from your audio system. This means that ground loop hum, buzzing, and other unwanted noises are virtually eliminated.

Whether your audio system is right next to you, or in the next room, our StudioSeries cables (available separately or with the model 1300) will let you connect up to 80 feet away without any loss of quality.

Or use the built-in low distortion headphone amplifier for private listening at your computer. The design utilizes high current operational amplifiers instead of IC based headphone amplifiers found in most products. So you can listen for as long as you like without experiencing "listening fatigue".

Most importantly, you'll be able to play all of your music - CD, MP3, iTunes, Windows Media, any of the lossless formats (FLAC, APE), podcasts, streaming radio - even video soundtracks - whatever the format. Unlike music server products, the stereo-link uses your existing player software to play the music files. So there are no compatability problems or Digital Rights Management (DRM) issues - if you have the software, it will play it. Now and in the future. On practically ALL modern computers; desktop PCs to notebooks, Macs and even Linux. No drivers to install. No drivers to upgrade. Never obsolete.

Why stereo-link?

stereo-link products are designed to give you the best sound possible, with plug and play simplicity. We bring to our designs years of experience in the professional, mid and high-end audio industry.

We understand that the analog design can be even more important than the digital design, and that combining the two is as much an art as a science. Unlike mass-market USB audio devices, we pay special attention to the real-world problems that can get in the way of your listening enjoyment. Problems which often don't appear until you actually tie your electrically noisy computer to a quiet and revealing audio system. Problems even high-end manufacturers ignore.

Who we are

stereo-link was the first company to introduce a quality USB DAC in June of 2000. Our experience in the field is unmatched. Our engineers have been involved in digital audio since its infancy, and include the same people who developed the SigTech Digital Room Correction Systems. Our designs have been recognized by leading audio magazines such as Stereophile and The Absolute Sound, including earning 2 Golden Ear Awards in 1999.
Our products are manufactured in the USA by Sonus Research & Design, Inc. a company specializing in the development of advanced digital audio products. Some of the products we develop we sell ourselves, some we develop for other companies. All our products are fully tested to ensure they meet our strict audio standards. And of course we stand behind each one we sell with a mony back guarantee and a full warranty. Click here for more About Us
